Mark Higgins together with 14 others each rode 180 miles on their bicycles, over the Van Buren Hills in Aroostook County to promote awareness and raise money for Parkinson's disease research.
The ride started on September 5, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. at the end of Route One in Fort Kent with Mark's brother Frank Higgins and his father Paul who drove the car to see to the safety of the riders. On again to Mojo's Bicycle Shop on 719 Main Street, Presque Isle to fix a flat tire and a gala finish at the Ellis' General Store on Main Street in Patten! Riders were treated to a home made pizza dinner by Louise & Al Ellis of Patten. This exciting event was aired on the WMTW Channel 8 news in Presque Isle.
Born and raised in Presque Isle, Mark now lives with his wife Debra in Windham. He was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease, twenty years ago, at the young age of 35. A former master welder, and diver for sea scallops, Mark has been forced to give up his working career because of Parkinson's disease. However, he has never given up on life. As with many people who are afflicted with Parkinson's disease, Mark's attitude is positive, reflecting his zest for living life each day to the fullest.
The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA); State of Maine Chapter extends a "thank you" for over $1000 in contributions as well as for the sponsorship from Mojo's Bike Shop, Ellis General Store, and for the donated water from Coke & Pepsi.
Mark has requested that funds raised be used for research into the causes and potential cures of Parkinson's disease. Therefore, all money will be added to the general research fund at the American Parkinson Disease Association. Our organization recently passed the 25 million dollar mark in funds allotted to various research projects throughout the world. A large part of these funds has come from generous supporters just like you. Your contribution will make a difference.
Thank you!
